Leaving...

- Friday, 22 June 2018. to read...
Leaving home or leaving any familiar face is always a big decision. Leaving that place of comfort to venture into unknown territory can be one of the biggest decisions in your life. For me it was the most worthwhile decision I have made in all of my years. But at today years old I can proclaim leaving Trinidad and Tobago has been the most frightening thing for me. I left everything I knew over the twenty four years of my life. (Everything I love and cherish). Today, 10 months into my move, I can say and give anyone looking to make a move some advice.

1. Stepping out of your comfort zone can always teach you something, I recommend that if you are contemplating leaving home or going abroad to live or study, make sure this a decision you are doing for yourself and not for others. Make sure leaving your comfort zone is something that you have decided without any outside influence.

2. Have a positive attitude. Let me tell you now, there will be things which happens when you leave home that you not accustomed to. You will meet people; whose beliefs, cultures and practices are different than yours and you have to learn how to keep a positive attitude and habituate.

3. Learn to adapt, don't be scared to ask questions, keep an open mind, try new foods, try things you normally don't try. Remove your mind from "the box of your comfort zone".

4. You don't need all the stuff you are thinking about taking. I can vouch for this. The amount of things I decided to take before moving and the amount of things I actually have used is ridiculous, it has gotten to a point where I have started donating some of my stuff. My go to items were; my under garments (obviously), my laptop, four pairs of my shoes, my bible and my hair/makeup products. Ask yourself when packing, is this a need or is it a want?

5. Know this, YOU WILL GET HOME SICK. There will be times that you do miss that comfort zone, the people and your routine. Usually in the first three months of moving that's when you become the most home sick, which actually did happen to me. (I'm over that now)

6. Have a support system. We've reached in an era where calling your loved ones is a button away, therefore it is very easy to contact  "your support system". You may not physically be with them or around them but the communication is key to keeping yourself grounded and sane.

7. When you have decided that this a venture for you, personally I recommend that you be very wary of those you share this venture with. I have a strong belief in people around you wishing bad on your good intentions. Some people are very good at pretending, so when you think "their support" comes with good intentions, you just need to take that with a grain of salt. Someone's negative aura surrounding your dream or plans has a very huge impact . Don't just apply this to moving but with all the plans in your life.
